As we approach this holiday season, let's stop and reflect upon what the holidays really mean. For many, it means getting together with family. For others, it means holiday parties and lots of food. For some, it might mean a vacation in a warm climate as a get-away from work and/or school. And yet for others, it might mean just another day on the calendar. Regardless of how you might view the holidays, I think it would be fair to say that for the majority, the holidays and gift-giving go hand in hand.

The gift industry is huge. Just look at the rise of gift cards, just one facet of the gift industry. The National Retail Federation (NRF) estimates that consumers will spend a total of $24.81 billion on Gift Cards this holiday season alone. That's about a $6 billion increase over 2005. And that's just for the holidays. But how original is a gift card? How unique is it? Not very. Sure, a gift card is a practical gift, but giving should be just as fun as receiving, and sometimes being practical is not very fun. So why not look for a unique gift instead?

We all know the idea of gift-giving stretches well beyond the holidays. It seems that as our lives get busier and busier, pressure exists to bestow unique gifts unto others for all sorts of occasions. Sure, there are the obvious: birthdays, anniversaries, new babies. But what about a gift for a new pet, or for a newly engaged couple? Will a card be sufficient anymore?

That depends. How close are you with the recipient? What kind of message do you want to send? For many instances, a card will do; other times, you'll want to go out of your way a bit and get something different, something that says "I put a lot of thought into this gift, and into your occasion." It's those instances that make gift-giving a joy, and not a chore. And with the internet, you can find a plethora of fun and unique gifts for all kinds of occasions...it just takes a little investigating.

Start by using a search engine to help you find the sites. If you simply search under "unique gifts" you won't get very far. Try "unique fun gifts" instead. Or "unique gift ideas." Sure, a lot of "familiar" sites will pop up, but you'll also see some not-so-familiar sites. For instance, did you know you can name an actual star for someone? Or that you could plant a tree in someone's honor or memory? There's a whole world of fun, unique, creative, personalized gifts out there - and when you give them, you will smile just as broadly as the recipient.
