Christmas & Clydesdales In St. Louis

I grew up in St. Louis. For years I lived about a mile away from the Anheuser-Busch World Headquarters, nestled snugly along the Mississippi River. Sometimes in the evenings, we used to go up on the roof to watch the sunset splash orange shadows across the silent barges, making their way along the river’s expansive highway. The brewery takes up a 13 square block area in South St. Louis, and was built in the mid-1800s. During this time of year, they create a light show for the local holiday celebration, in a small 3 or 4 block area. Since it's a cul-de-sac, everyone has to intentionally turn onto that street to drive through it. Using all little white lights, they string them endlessly around the borders of all the buildings, windows, doorframes, … and that includes one of the original stables. They still keep some of their Clydesdales there, always ready to make an appearance in a variety of parades, and such. I'm sure they are staying very busy this time of year. The public is invited to become part of the show, by turning their headlights down to parking lights, and slowing to a crawl as they drive through the area. It's like a little Victorian dreamscape, and I try to go through there whenever I'm in St. Louis during the holidays. Speaking of the Clydesdales, … I love the breed. They're like big, friendly dogs, and just about bomb-proof. An old friend of mine used to be one of their drivers. (They have a number of teams, stationed around the country for various events.) Essentially, the drivers are responsible for all the feeding, grooming, and care of 8-10 horses, when they're on the road. Believe me, those horses get more pampering than I do! As Christmas approaches, I find myself many miles away from my old stomping grounds, and my thoughts drift back to happy memories of “little white lights, and big friendly horses”. So when you hear those jingling harness bells coming down the road this holiday season, … remember me, and know that I’m somewhere, softly smiling. About the Author: B.
