Abusing Power with Spy Cameras

Who doesn't like to be Big Brother? To be the all-seeing, powerful god of all? Well, maybe not "controlling god of everything" but being the all-seeing one would be simply as dominant, don't you think? That might be one reason why there are numerous issues with regards to using hidden spy cameras, invasion of privacy being one of these. Power is basically something that anyone hates and, ironically, everybody wants. Spy cams, while they are an advantage to a specific person, could be very harmful to another. They can be an important tool or something that would pull you down.

There is this one circumstance involving a professor who made use of a hidden camera disguised as a button to videotape naughty students in school. The students and their families have filed charges against the said professor for "abusing her authority" as well as recording the students without their permission. True, it was against the law for the teacher to do such, yet if we evaluate the other way, we could see that what the professor was basically doing was revealing these behavioral issues to the public so that they can be addressed accordingly. I am somewhat sure that the Virginia Tech tragedy is still recent on everyone's minds. Such behavioral leanings could have been recognized earlier and consequently avoided the tragedy from happening. If a covert spy cam is what it requires to stop such tragic occurrences, then I would not mind teachers recording their students at school at all.

Nevertheless, there are also some who misuse the benefits of hidden video cameras. I would assume everyone is aware of concerns of scandalous behavior caught on video that are being utilized to blackmail an individual. Or those that blatantly invades someone's privacy as in placing hidden cameras in locations wherein surveillance isn't vital, like the bathroom or personal rooms for reasons of personal satisfaction or lascivious intent. Stalking utilizing spy video cams is also another form of abuse of this technology.

Yet there is one thing that surprises me. Some homeowners utilize nanny cameras to check their baby-sitters and house maids while they're away. And these nannies are not conscious of the existence of the spy cam until they get caught doing some monkey business and confronted about it. Still no one seems to be protesting. When they get caught mistreating a child or doing something inappropriate, the matter of the nanny's claim to privacy is not raised. It's because the owners possess the authority to do whatever they want to secure the family and the nanny did something wrong.

Hence, when is the utilization of concealed surveillance cameras justified and when is it not? Seemingly, the thin red demarcation dividing them is much thinner than we believe. When the person using the surveillance cam is in power, its utilization is justified. But if selecting to use concealed spy cameras will make us safer, then I'm for it. Furthermore, why will I be concerned about it when I am not doing anything that is against the rules or is morally wrong? Yet just as long as they maintain well behind the line, it would not be a concern.
