Choosing a gift for someone who we are close to, is not that hard as we understand well about his wish list, favorite color, exact size and so on. On the other hand, it can be a difficult task if it’s for someone you don’t really know. For instance, a gift for your new neighbor, a colleague from oversea branch or a relative who seldom visits you. In this case, you can’t choose a gift base on his personality. Instead, browse through the gift catalog which categorizes gifts by occasions, such as birthday, thank you, congratulations, housewarming and others. For your friend or colleague from oversea, you can get him a traditional costume, toy or a souvenir that showcases your country’s unique culture. Meanwhile, for your new neighbor, observe a bit. Do they own a pet? Does his son have a big pile of books? Does he have a golf stick? Analyze and you can get a clue for a gift base on his hobby.

Now, you may have an idea on what to buy for a gift, however, here comes the second question. What color does he likes? It’s good if you know that but what if you don’t? Imagine a great gift with a wrong color. Hence, a brief understanding on color will help you in your decision making. In general, colors can be categorized into warm colors and cool colors. Warm colors comprise of red, yellow and orange; cool colors are blue and green. Warm colors are vibrant and exciting while cool colors have calming effect. Let’s look a bit deeper into the colors.

As we all know, red is often known as feminine color as it implies love and romance. For example, red roses and dress. However, it’s more than that. Red also denotes hot, power, strength, courage and energetic. Therefore, red is also suitable for males, such as red tie, red mp3 player. Besides that, red is very striking and able to portray a rebellious, brave and passion image for the teenagers, like a red t-shirt. Meanwhile, red and yellow may stimulate the desire for food. Hence, a red and yellow motivational poster may not be suitable for the one’s who are trying to lose weight.

For yellow, it is a bright and cheerful color. It represents joy and happiness. That’s why the popular smiley face is in yellow. A yellow mug or clock will be a perfect gift for the active person or positive thinker. In contrast of the attention grabbing yellow, light yellow has a more soothing effect. A light yellow clothes looks gentle and fresh. It goes well with the elderly.

Blue is a cool and calm color which also denotes stability, confident and reliability. It is generally suitable for males as mothers often choose blue shirts for their kids. Besides that, it also evokes a peaceful mood and helps people to sleep easily. Hence, a blue bed sheet is also a unique gift. Dark blue conveys wisdom, trust and seriousness. Corporate gifts are preferably in blue.

Green is the best color to represent nature and environment. If your friend is a nature lover, a gift in green will please him. Green also signifies growth and hope. Meanwhile, light green and dark green brings different meaning. Light green indicates fresh, peaceful and friendliness; Dark green looks strong and stable. For green and blue, both colors are weak in stimulating appetite. Therefore, it is better not to get a dark blue, dark green candy wrappers or food basket.

Black denotes seriousness, bold and conservative. Hence, black suit is often seen in formal functions. If you get a black gown as a gift, it’s not only formal, but looks elegant and sexy. In addition, black clothes can make one looks slim. Besides that, black also indicates prestigious, modernism and sophisticated, such as a black stationery set or handphone. In contrast of black, there is white which portrays a pure, clean and innocent image. A lovely white dress will make a girl an angel, and it makes a nice gift for your neighbor’s little girl. However, too much of white or white alone will look dull and plain.

In the aspect of matching colors, black can go along with any other colors. So do white. Therefore, it is wise to choose white or black apparel as a gift. Meanwhile, yellow and blue, red and green are known as contrast color. Think properly before choosing these contrast color as sometimes they look fine (like Christmas), but sometimes they look awkward. You should also consider the colors in terms of culture. This is because colors depict different meanings for different cultures. For instance, Malays might like green but not the others. For Chinese, black is bad luck and red is prosperous. However, red associates with mourning in South Africa. So beware of choosing the color for someone with different culture.

Overall, the general guidelines when choosing the colors are like bright colors for children; black or vibrant colors for teenagers; blue, black or bold colors for adult; light colors for elderly. You might spend a lot of time getting the perfect gift but with a wrong color. It may be a bit disappointing but never mind, as what’s matter in the end, is the sincerity to give a gift.
