Who knew throwing out last years calendar and putting up a fresh clean one could inspire so much optimism… no wonder why it is a ritual that many of us look forward to every year. Once your fresh calendar or planner is staring you in the face what are your thoughts? Is it a continuation of last year, a moment of pause to reflect on what you want to be different, or is the calendar already in control demanding that you fill in the blanks with an otherwise already scheduled life?
Most of us experience a combination of all of that, but we usually start by filling in what we already know, our work schedules, our appointments, our family and friends birthdates and although all these things are important parts of our lives, is it really what is personally and privately most important to us… but are these the pivotal moments that will make this year your best ever?
What is really important to you this year? The reason why I want to know this is because until the last couple of years I wasn't even sure for myself. Sure, I want to make a great living, grow my online business and have health and happiness for me and my family, world peace and Everyday Bliss... right ;0). I mean I named my company after it. But what do you and I really want, what is it that is most important to us and where do we get more of it?
I realize looking back; these are the questions that lead me to pursue coaching. You see before coaching I only had a vague idea of what I wanted and even at that it wasn't what was really important to me and my life reflected that... for the most part my life was still good, but something always felt like it was missing.
Do you know what I mean? What I learned is that what is really most important to us rarely gets our attention and energy. Life gets in the way... I know, I have a husband, kids, a dog, cat, baseball & guitar practice and a business to run and so on. All important roles in my life, but I also had personal and professional ambitions that weren’t getting the attention that was needed to bring them to life. What made all the difference was I started to save some of my time and energy so I could focus on what really mattered to me. I started to talk about it, not only with the coaches I have hired over the years, but with anyone that would listen... in turn I also started listening to what was important to others, what really mattered to them.
Getting to know myself and others this way brought color to my world and new experiences, opportunities and friends I would otherwise never have known. Turning good into great, even extraordinary... and still I continue to learn because that is what keeps life interesting.
So as you look at your fresh new 2007 calendar or planner…
•Make room for what really matters to you first and if your not sure, make room on your calendar to find out.
•Reflect on what your major energy drains were in 2006 and reduce, delegate or eliminate as many drains on your energy as possible.
•Schedule nothing, life balance is spending as much time being as doing. Doing nothing is good, leaving space for something new is great – make the space.
•Picture yourself doing what really matters to you on a consistent basis. Imagine the difference this will make in your life.
•No cancellations or refunds… this is a commitment to what is most important... YOU!
I’ve looked and this year you will not find “maybe someday” on this year’s calendar. Make room for what is most important to you right now and make this Year your best year yet!
