Have you had any golf instruction recently? If so, did it help your golf swing and game? I am curious because I have had some good experiences and some very bad ones in regards to instruction for golf from a teaching pro.

The Right Approach

Just like with any service you buy, the approach that is applied dictates the results. Work with a golf instructor with the right approach, and the sky is the limit. Pick one that has an approach that doesn't fit your style, and your game will suffer.

What is the right approach? Well...first off it entails diagnosing your personal swing faults preferably with video. That way you can see first hand what the instructor is showing in regards to your swing flaws. This makes the session more believable and will be an eye-opener for you!

Secondly, applying golf drills that address your specific swing technique issues. I have literally watched an instructor for an entire day, give the same lesson to 9 different golfers. The EXACT same lesson! I could not believe it! No regard to their personal needs, just teaching for him!

I am not here to blast all golf instruction teaching pros, but do want to educate the golfing community on what to look for when deciding on spending money with instruction, in hopes to help your game.

Conventional Or "Out-There"

Another thing to look for in your lesson is the philosophy of the teacher. Is he/she conventional or a bit "out there" in regards to swing technique and outcome? If you hear anything that sounds kind of funky, it probably is...don't do it! All the top instructors have the same basic teaching philosophy, but express it a little differently, which is what makes them unique.

You're safe to stick to more conventional golf swing instruction, rather than risk trying something you think does not sound right.

Do a little research before you decide on your golf instruction professional. It will save you a ton of frustration, and money!
