Site Builder or HTML?
When you build your web site, you are going to need to use a web language to build it.
The most popular web language is HTML, and most of you reading this manual probably do not know HTML. So you have a few choices: 1) learn HTML, 2) pay someone to program in HTML, or 3) use a site builder program that will basically convert what you write into HTML.
The first choice, learning HTML, will take some time, although my opinion is that it will pay off big time in the long run. However, I believe it is more important that you get a web site up and running, whether you know HTML or not. You can always add the HTML knowledge at a later date.
If you do not want to learn HTML, but want to be able to design web pages with HTML, I recommend you use FrontPage. It is a MicroSoft program that uses a WYSIWYG approach to programming in HTML. You basically type in your content much as you would in a Word program, and it writes the HTML for you. I only recommend using it to start if you are relatively experienced with MicroSoft type programs like Word or PowerPoint, because the menus in FrontPage are very much similar to those programs. You will have a huge learning curve, so you will need to spend a good amount of time learning to use FrontPage, but in the long run, it is worth the time.
The second choice is to pay someone to program for you. There are several online companies that connect programmers with web site owners like your self. The advantage to having someone else program for you is that you can focus on things like creating products and your marketing campaigns. The disadvantages are that it will cost money, and if you are starting on a shoestring, that will not be an option, and if you have someone else build it, it will be more difficult for you to make changes to your web site or business without paying again.
The third choice is to use a site builder program. A site builder is a collection of predesigned web templates that you can choose from and literally type in your own information and the site builder will convert your text into HTML.
Although a site builder will work for you if you are just getting started, you probably not want to use it for long, and will probably become quickly frustrated with the limitations to your own creativity that it will impose.
I personally use FrontPage, and found that it was relatively easy to learn to use at a basic level. Although I do not have any programming experience, I can navigate menu-driven programs pretty easily, so take that into account before you purchase it.
