So you saw an indoor electric radio controlled helicopter flying, it looked so easy. Great for the novice, or for those who decided to give it a go – small outlay. So you’ve bought one but can’t work out what’s wrong – are you sure it’s the helicopter, radio – or you?
If you are just starting out some would recommend buying cheap as it an absolute probability that you are going to break your helicopter a number of times before you master it. Also your initial outlay may be less should you decide it’s not for you. Breakages cost money but if you can’t get spares you will have wasted your initial purchase cost - it will never fly again.
You need lots of indoor space. Outdoors it can be blown around by light winds, as the helicopter has a very small mass. I see http://www.heliexpertise.co.uk are creating a list of indoor flying sites.
Getting help from experienced people who understand and are will allow you to learn reasonably faster and you can also get advise on the best model to buy, especially if you are a complete beginner. This source could be from a knowledgeable model shop or local helicopter club. Be careful, there are many opinions - that’s all they are, it’s your decision in the end. A helicopter club will also provide access to experienced flyers whose help; advice and encouragement will allow you to learn much more quickly.
See what model everybody else has in your area has and perhaps follow the same trend. Use the opportunity to have a chat with other helicopter flyers. Remember this is also about meeting people you can trust and hence learning from them. Model shops may offer full spares, but you only find out whether they actually have parts in stock when you want it. So ask around - the more a particular helicopter is used locally the more chance there will be for obtaining parts.
Depending on how determined you are to stick with model helicopters you will be looking for:
Ready to fly, or does it need additional items
Stable flight characteristics
Battery size / type suitable
Relatively cheap to buy
Spares readily available at the right price
Assistance available
Upgradeable - or none ever needed
If the answers are not readily forthcoming you will be on your own when all goes pear shaped.
