You cannot tick off Melbourne in a day - or your Melbourne holidays won’t even scratch the surface.Here are the things to do on your first visit to give you the Melbourne basics. Then you can venture out from there and delve into your insiders Melbourne niche.Following Melbourne holiday attractions are a must:<ol><li><b>Federation Square</b>, we call it Fed Square. This is the hub of Melbourne, our public place. It connects the Melbourne city area with the Yarra River and Southbank.<br><br>It is a place to hang out, or to listen to a free concert or live broadcasting of a Melbourne event.<br><br>The Fed Square buildings are cubic structures housing various museums, including the Ian Potter Centre, the Australian section of the National Gallery of Victoria. A must for the art lover!</li><br><br><li>The best place to enjoy the spectacular Melbourne skyline is from the <b>Birrarung Marr</b>. That is the stretch or parkland along the Yarra from Fed Square to the MCG (the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground). <br><br>Along this urban park land you will find large sized sculptures and public art, a tree-lined river promenade and the Federation Bells that ring through the air various times a day.</li><br><br><li>From Fed Square you can also walk across the Princess Bridge to the <b>Southbank promenade</b>. On Sundays there is the Arts Centre Sunday Market – a venue for a wide range or artists and crafts people presenting their goods.<br><br>Further along the Southbank, you will find the Crown Casino and entertainment complex with food courts, cafes, shops, and nightclubs. On the river front are fountains - very attractive for kids play -, sound and light shows.</li><br><br><li>A great way to get an overview of Melbourne is to catch the free <b>City Circle Tram</b>. It is a hop on – hop off old style tram that takes you free of charge around the city square and into the Docklands. It has announcements of the Melbourne holiday attractions on the way.<br><br>For a more sophisticated tram experience, the same type of old tram has also been transformed into a tramcar restaurant traveling around the city at night.</li><br><br><li>From Southbank, a <b>Melbourne River Cruise</b> is a popular attraction. You can either take a ferry or a cruise boat for a trip along the Yarra, past the Docklands and Port Melbourne, under the Westgate Bridge to Williamstown. You will get a great view of the skyline and the Melbourne Port along the way. Williamstown is a great place for lunch.</li><br><br><li>A visit to the <b>Queen Victoria Markets</b> is a must. It is a great place to buy ‘fruit and vegies’ and well as other specialties such as continental meats, cheeses, breads, fish…<br><br>It is also the place to go for a bargain. There are clothes, leather, ‘designer’ bags, souvenirs... The market is worth visiting just for the atmosphere…<br><br>On Wednesday nights, during the summer months, there is a night market, with entertainment, music, the usual goods and even more atmosphere.</li><br><br><li>Visit <b>St Kilda</b>. This is everything from seaside resort and beach, to shopping and German cake shops, to Luna Park and various theatres.<br><br>Make sure you stroll along Acland Street with its variety of shops and cafes. Also, check out the Sunday market with original art and craft along the esplanade.<br><br>On the beach, there is the St Kilda Pavilion. Walking along St Kilda Pier will takes you a long way out into the Bay. <br><br>Little Fairy Penguins have created their ‘city home’ in a rock structure, not far from that pier.
