The Rocky mountain west is comprised of the states Mo.,Id.,Wy.,Co.,Nv.,Ut. Although all of these states are well known for for their incredible beauty there are many aspects of this area that most people do not often explore but are warrant a visit. If you have the desire and ability then visit these on your next trip..
1. Visit the Thermal Springs- This geographic area has a great deal of thermic activity which has resulted in a a good number of bathing hot springs in this region. Springs are as developed or as primitive as one likes. For those that are more outdoorsy then White Sulfur Springs Hotel is the best place for you. Those that like more of a spa feel, check out some of the thermal springs that Colorado has to offer.
2. Search for Pictographs- The ancient Native Americans of the Intermountain west were extremely artistic, and a a lot of there 4000 year old art can persists to this day, painted on rock surfaces and overhanging cliffs across the region. For those that just want a taste, Fremont State Park in Utah has a great trail and museum, for those that enjoy walking Grand Gulch in Utah is a delightful place to stop for a visit.
3. Enjoy the Smaller National Recreation Areas- If you have not been to Glacier Park, then by all means you should see there first, but for those of you that have already done the main circuit of parks in the west you could think about visiting the underestimated ones. Cumulatively, this region has over fifty National sites, and most of these states have outstandingstate park systems as well.
4. Check Out the Regional Museums (as well as the most popular ones)- Some of the most interesting museums are those that are off the beaten track, like the city museum in Three Forks, Montana in which the local people gathered memorabilia from their area spanning a 100 years. Of course, some of the bigger museums are worth visiting as well, such as the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wy. This museum covers many different themes of the west such as Old Guns of the West or Modern Western Art.
5. Learn to Ski- The West is famous for its sunny weather, but we also have the best powder around. For those of you that are not interested in trying snowboarding, you might try cross-country. Sun Valley, Idaho has wonderful trails as well as the Beaverhead-Deerlodge NF in Montana.
6. Explore a Mountain Lake this coming summer– The mountain ranges of the west are full of small and secluded lakes. A great many of them are popular but a few of the most most interesting are off the main tourist track and frequently require a rewarding journey to get to. One of our favorites is Lost Lake in the Wind River Mountains. This alpine lake is surrounded by tall cliffs and jagged mountain peaks that were formed by the retreqating glaciers of the last ice age. The Wind River mnts. are known for fishing and backpacking opportunities. Another fantastic place to visit in the Wind River Mountains is Lonsome Lake in the Cirque of the Towers area in the southern half of the Wind River Mountains.
As you can tell, there are a many great things that you should try to do in the mountain west, instead of the oldgroup tour. Any of the above suggestions will not only take you to the heart of the true West but provide you with many happy memories for years to come.
